Cardano Foundation Complex systems, simple solutions.

Cardano, a 3rd generation blockchain platform, while not centrally owned, it is being developed by Cardano Foundation. They asked us to help communicate the huge ambition and vision of this undertaking with a new website design.

The challenge

Cardano is a 3rd generation blockchain platform. Built using an evidence based, peer reviewed methodology, it allows scalability, security, governance and sustainability.

While not centrally owned, it is being developed by Cardano Foundation, who asked us to help communicate the huge ambition and vision of this undertaking. One part of that was the redesign of the Cardano Foundation website.

Our approach

As part of Project Renovare, we conducted extensive interviews with the Cardano community to gain a deep understanding of the context and imperatives for this work. The output  needed to reflect the Cardano that the community know and love, while signalling the Foundation’s exciting vision for its future.

Those conversations led us back to Gerolamo Cardano, the historical figure after whom the brand was named. He was a controversial provocateur in his day — a polymath, whose interests and proficiencies ranged from being a mathematician, physician, biologist, physicist, chemist, astrologer, astronomer, philosopher, writer, and gambler.

As a mathematician, Cardano was the first to describe hypocycloids: in geometry, a special plane curve generated by the trace of a fixed point on a small circle that rolls within a larger circle. These formed the basis of the existing Cardano icon, so we developed a range of images derived from them, using these as illustrative and decorative treatments.

All outputs for the Cardano Foundation used the same hypocycloid forms as their starting point. We used a refined and targeted palette, and some other complementary elements, including a system to localise the Cardano Foundation brand to all the languages of the world where needed.

The result

The combination of complex systems – like hypocycloids and targeted colour palettes – to produce a simple visual solution is an apt representation of the Cardano platform and the ambition behind it.

We hope that the design of this website will help the Cardano Foundation to achieve its aim of expanding the understanding and adoption of blockchain.
